Horns to Pickles

I promise not every post is going to be about pregnancy and babies, but since I had to withhold 13 weeks of information, it’s going to take me another few posts until I can catch up to the present and start blogging about other things.

Finding a new doctor…

It wasn’t too hard to find another doctor considering we’re only really given two options (we have a few more, but they don’t publicize them). I had seen the other doctor in the spring for a quick visit, because I had a cyst and the on post clinic said they couldn’t get me in for two weeks and it “wasn’t a big deal.” To me, it was a big deal, so thankfully, our insurance allowed me to go elsewhere for care. I was really comfortable with the doctor, and it wasn’t until after we left his office that I realized that visit was my first OB/Gyn visit to a male doctor. Previously, I had avoided male OB/Gyns at all costs.

I didn’t choose to go back to this doctor right away when we found out I was pregnant, because the nurses at the on post clinic really talked up the hospital where the other doctor delivers. At the time, we didn’t realize that both hospitals offer almost identical services. After our nightmare of a first appointment with doctor #1 (whose name sounds like the sound a horn makes), we decided to give the other hospital a go. By the way, doctor #2’s name sounds like another name for a pickle.

Before our first appointment with Dr. Pickle (as he will henceforth be known), we had a liaison from our insurance company meet us at the hospital to give us a tour. We got to see the maternity ward and labor and delivery rooms. It’s a small facility, but I like it. I have met four of the OBs there and have had appointments with 3 of them, so if Dr. Pickle isn’t available on the day, then I think I won’t be too worried or upset.

Dr. Pickle saw us in a timely manner, did an ultrasound (he has a much better monitor than “Dr. Horn”) and told us that our child looks “perfect” and everything is “absolutely normal.” Hurray! Dr. Pickle, I like you. Oh, and our 8 week ultrasound was really impressive. The baby went from being a blip on the screen to a body with a discernible head. Neat!

Since that appointment (at 8 weeks), I have also had my 12 week check up. More on that as well as the woes of the first trimester later this week.
