It’s Moving Day (also, oops…)

I wrote this yesterday and linked people here and forgot to post the entry. Oops. Sorry!

Without further ado, yesterday’s blog post:

You may recall a post about a month and a half ago where we announced our request for exception to policy for a move to a different housing area had been approved. I don’t believe we’ve mentioned it since then, but a lot has happened that has brought us to today – moving day!

When we got approved, we were put on a waiting list. We were the lowest priority move, so people who moved here or were forced out of housing were constantly getting put in front of us. We thought we might never get housing (which is probably true). We began to talk about our complaints about our current apartment, and John realized we had been living with mold. I think we had gotten so accustomed to it that we had forgotten how unhealthy and harmful it can be. So John called housing and an inspector came out. He ordered a cleaning crew to come the following day. A few days later, we noticed that not all of the mold was gone and we also had terrible black mold in the basement where we do our laundry (I’m sure you’re getting a lovely picture of our military housing, eesh). The inspector came back and said yes, we needed to move.
He put in paperwork last week and due to John’s persistence, housing let us move today! The moving crew arrived at our apartment at 8:15 this morning and as of 9:45, John said both our bedrooms were already packed up. At this rate, they will probably be moving the boxes and furniture into our new place around noon or 1 PM, which means by the time I get off work, we’ll have a new home! Crazy!
Luckily, John has the day off today, so he’s there supervising the move. I will head over at lunch to see how things are going. We are thrilled to be out of that place and into our new apartment.
Benefits of the new place:
  • We have been putting 200 miles on our car each week JUST driving to and from work. That’s disgusting, a drain on our finances and extra pollution the Earth does not need. Our new place is a 5-minute walk from work.
  • We won’t have to put up with rush hour traffic anymore, and if we want to go downtown, we can take the Strassenbahn (aka cable car/public transit) because we’re right by a stop. At our old place, there was no access to public transportation anywhere nearby.
  • We have a washer and dryer in our unit!! Before, we were having to carry our laundry down 3.5 flights of stairs to the basement to a shared area of washers and dryers. Oh, and our monogramed towels and wash clothes have been stolen from down there before.
  • We have about 200 sq ft of more living space.
  • There’s a billion more windows, which means more natural light.
  • Our windows face north and south. In our old place, it was east and west, so it was much hotter.
  • We have SOME American outlets. That means we don’t have to use transformers as much, AND I can do my hair in the bathroom in the morning. In the old place, I had to use our American power strip that was hooked ot the transformer in the living room.
  • Much more closet space in the living area. We actually have a linen closet now.
  • A pantry. Seriously. So excited.
The only downsides I can think of are no double sinks in the bathroom and less bathroom storage space.
Last night we moved our dirty clothes and pantry and refrigerator items. I was amazed at how much more kitchen space we have. I also started a loan of laundry right away. Oh, and we brought our valuables and important documents over since we didn’t want the movers to be handling those.
Ahhh I can’t believe we’re moving today!! (ahem, yesterday)
Update: Since I’m posting this on Saturday,I can update you all and say we have officially moved in. I cannot find my shoes other than the shoes I wore to work yesterday and my cowboy boots. Guess which shoes I’m wearing until I find my flip flops? Yup, boots. Also, we cannot find our All Clad skillet and frying pans. We’re hoping the movers just forgot to pack them. We’ll head back to the old place (which we still need to clean) later today and check. For now, I’m working on my comps and John just took Béni to the vet. Béni hasn’t been feeling well today. I hope he’s ok, and he’s just out of sorts because he’s confused about the move.
Happy weekend!

  1. I will send you a million Old Navy flip flops 🙂 size 8 or 9?
I bet Beni is confused, my cats hid in the closet or bathroom cabinet for 3 days. Now they rule the place!
School is ridiculous but I love it. miss you and John!
    xoxo

    • Hehe thanks for the offer. Luckily, John found my shoes this morning. Thank goodness! I was tired of wearing my boots.

It’s good to know that Beni isn’t the only pet who has been really upset by a move. I think he’s starting to feel more comfortable here. Apparently he also had a stomach parasite 🙁 He’s taking his meds like a good little puppy though and should be feeling much better soon.

      We miss you too!

  2. and again….please ignore my older brother’s dirty expression to the right >>>>

  3. Oooo, washer and dyer in your apt….lucky! I still have to go down 3.5 flights of stairs to do laundry in the basement. Congrats on the move! Im still looking for work. Do they hire any Medieval Historians around here? LOL Its Europe! you would think! But then again my toddler is definitely keeping me busy these days. My career is currently on hold for now. See you later hopefully! My hasse goes to the skatepark area down the street a lot, so maybe you’ll see us there on of these evenings!

  4. wow that was a whirlwind move!! if all you’re missing is a sink and some storage in the bathroom, then it sounds like you moved into a place one step closer to heaven!! how many flights up? i am just asking because i know you said you carry beni up and down the stairs. . . and i know he’s just getting bigger and bigger! like trying to carry clifford the big red dog!!
can’t wait to see pix of the new house. and imagine how much better you’ll feel without all the black mold!
    whoo hoo!!

    • We’re on the 3rd floor again, but I really think the stairs are less steep here. We have started letting Beni walk them by himself. He’s just too big now (probably about 40 lbs).

As soon as we get unpacked and everything, I will take pics of our new place and post them!
