The Netherlands: Part 2

Finally catching up on all our travel blogging…

Sunday before last, we headed back to Germany from Holland but not before we explored the beach along the North Sea in Katwijk. We took Béni, and he had a blast. He dug his first hole ever (uh-oh, but also sooooo cute) and ran a little in the ocean. After the beach, we ate a delicious strawberry yogurt pie thing (apparently it’s very Dutch) that Jackie made and enjoyed a cup of coffee.

We left Katwijk around noon (I think) and started driving home but decided to stop off in the Hague (Den Haag) to drive by the International Criminal Court. After driving around for an hour in the most horrendous Sunday traffic we have EVER seen, we gave up and tried to grab lunch. We didn’t want McDonald’s, so we searched the GPS. One of the first hits was Applebee’s. Really?! Applebee’s?! We had to go to Applebee’s since finding a non-fast food American restaurant abroad is a real treat. Unfortunately, after another hour of driving through awful traffic (our GPS said it would only be 10 minutes to give you an idea of how close we were), we gave up on that too. We were so annoyed that we didn’t eat lunch until something like 5 PM once we crossed the border back into Germany. Oh, and guess where we stopped…yup, McDonald’s.

While driving in a car with your spouse for a total of about 17 hours in the span of 3 days, some hilarious things are bound to be said. We wrote two of them down, and hopefully you’ll find them at least somewhat amusing —

Said by me (Sarah) somewhere along the Autobahn north of Frankfurt after seeing a car pass by with an IKEA logo on it: That guy is driving an IKEA car. I wonder if he put it together himself.

Said by John circa Utrecht after about 7 hours of driving: I wonder if “Skip to My Lou” originated in England and is in fact a song about skipping to the bathroom.

As usual, enjoy the photos below, and just click the photos in the slide show to make them open in a new window with larger images.

  1. i didnt know IKEA sold cars.i wonder the same thing (if he had to assemble it himself hehe)!

    • No no, the car was just a company car. They don’t make IKEA cars. I was just being silly. Since the car had an IKEA logo on the door and basically everything at IKEA has to be put together after purchase, I was just being silly about the car being the same way. 🙂

  2. skip to my lou!!that is a funny take on that song!!1 gives a new mental image to the “pee pee dance!”
so glad you had a good time, so lame about all the traffic. and even lamer that you had to settle for mcdonalds!

  3. Cool!! By the way I didn’t know there was an Applebees in Scheveningen!!!! (part of The Hague) COOL!
Yeah traffic is nuts in the bigger cities. There’s no way you can normally drive, that’s why we all take public transportation whenever we go to a city. You guys should have gotten to an AC restaurant (it’s at every highway) or a VanderValk restaurant. Cheap and the food is quite ok :-)Glad you liked everything. When I told another friend that we had taken Beni to the beach, she was shocked! Apparantly it’s really bad for the hips, so they can only go when they’re between 6/9 months old…I didn’t know that….
