1. Favorite way to travel (plane, train, automobile, etc.)
Although I’m kind of scared of flying, I much prefer a short trip to an extended drive or train ride, so I’ll go with plane. However, if it’s between a train ride or a car, it’s a toss up depending on the destination and the route.
2. Where’s your favorite place to travel to that you’ve been to?
Paris or the Burgundy region of France
3. Where’s the place that you want to go but have never been?
Norway, Hawaii, and New Zealand
4. Do you deal with traffic well?
I like to think so…that is, unless I have somewhere I really need to be or if I need to use the bathroom. That said, I don’t think US traffic has anything on a German Autobahn Stau, so maybe I’ll be even more tolerant when we get back to the States. Maybe.
5. Ever had an emergency while traveling?
Yes. I burned my hand on a camping trip and had to go to the hospital.
6. Do you have a passport? What countries have you been to?
Yes. I am required to have one to live in Germany.
Countries I’ve been to: US, Mexico, Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Holland
I have also been on the border or Liechtenstein and have been in Heathrow Airport, but I don’t count that.
7. Are you’ve light packer or do you pack everything but the kitchen sink?
I’m somewhere in between. I usually skimp on clothes but over pack shoes and books.
8. Do you take the fastest route or the road less traveled?
It depends on the point of the travel. If we don’t have to be somewhere by a particular time, we often take the road less traveled. You never know what you might find!
9. Do any activities on the road? (like road games, reading, sleeping, etc. )
All of the above except reading. I get nauseous if I am not looking out the windows. I also cannot ride with my back to the direction of travel, so on trains, I always have to get a forward-facing seat, which is, at times, a challenge.
10. Use a paper map or GPS?
Until the advent of GPS, I used paper maps, but now we’re all about our GPS. Sometimes we turn it off and just follow the signs though. It really is easier when you’re going somewhere that is well-marked. Otherwise, your GPS might take you down a pedestrian way and almost wreck the bottom of your car or put you in danger of massive fines. Yes, that has happened to us. No, we didn’t get caught by the police. If we had, I doubt “my GPS told me to do it” would have been a valid excuse.
Your no. 10 made me think of a story I read in the paper some time ago. There was a road in England from which people turned off at the same spot and drove right into a river. This went on for some months and Police was already wondering why this did happen until they found out that all the people were using their GPS which wasn’t up-to-date. Originally there had been a bridge at the point where the people turned off the road, but this bridge had been teared down…
Wow. See, that’s a prime reason why common sense trumps computers any day of the week!
