It has been well over a year since we blogged about PD, also known as Psycho Dog, but more widely known as Béni. PD has made some noteworthy appearances in our lives over the past month involving frozen yogurt, windows and doors.
The first of these instances happened when we tried out our fancy schmancy new ice cream maker. We made ourselves a batch of plain frozen yogurt, and while cleaning up, John admitted to dropping a “little bit” on the ground for Béni’s pleasure. The recipe for this frozen yogurt is basically 3 parts plain yogurt to 1 part sugar. The “little bit” ended up being a dollop slightly larger than a silver dollar. Fast foward 30 minutes. John and I are enjoying a tv show in the living room when suddently Béni PD runs in front of the TV, grabs his chew toy, jumps up in the air and does a 180 degree spin and lands on his stomach. John and I gave each other the uh-oh look and watched in amusement as Béni ran back and forth along the width of our apartment about 10 times in as many seconds. Clearly this wasn’t going to work. A trip to drain the energy outside did the trick and he crashed hard from his little sugar high. Lesson: no more sugar for Béni.
In all fairness, we don’t give Béni sugar or processed food (other than his dog food and dog treats) on any regular basis. In fact, most days he sticks to dog food and treats with the occasional bite of a banana, apple, lettuce or carrot.
The window incident was only witnessed by me, and I really wish I had caught it on video. I might be able to win America’s Funniest Home Videos. Is that show still airing? Anyway, again, I was sitting on the couch in the living room knitting or watching TV or something relaxing when Béni whined at me out of boredom. I told him to go “look out the window.” Typically, he has to be told to put his paws up on the ledge, but this time, he took off running a good 12 feet from the window, leapt and went face first into the window. I screamed so loudly that John thought one of us had gotten really hurt. I thought Béni had to be hurt by how hard he smacked into the window, but no, he just looked at me sheepishly, wagged his tail and buried his head in my lap. Poor crazy dog.
The most recident PD appearance took place Monday night. John and I were in the bathroom getting ready for bed. Béni was looking extra tired, so we told him to go to bed. He happliy wandered off to the next room (our bedroom). A few seconds later, we hear our door close (not latch, just the door touched the frame). Béni shut the door to the bedroom! We cracked up. Although we have been teaching him this trick, he’s never done it when we haven’t commanded him to do so. Immediately, he opened the door (another new trick) and trotted back into the bathroom oh so pleased with himself. We were so amused that we gave him lots of praise, which somehow triggered the dismissal of Béni and the arrival of PD. He started racing back and forth between us (about a 5 ft distance) with the hair on his back raised and crazy eyes in full force. It took everything we had not to laugh and to scold him for his wild behavior.
Oh Béni, we love you!
I love dogs that can do tricks! That’s hilarious!
Our house is a circle, and sometimes our pups run back and forth and sit and wait around a corner for the other one. Then, there is an intense stare-down and then running the other way around the circle. Repeat about 15 times.
