Social Media

John is right. I haven’t written in our blog in awhile not because I “haven’t had time” but because I just don’t feel like it. To be completely honest, I have not felt like being on the computer at all. I was on Twitter for a few months, but it was too much of a distraction from “real life” to be worth it (also, I still don’t see the point aside from getting out important news fast). Even Facebook is getting less of my attention these days. I have thought about getting rid of it completely, which would be easier to do if we were still living in Texas. Right now, I do enjoy the bit of home that it gives us when we’re able to login and see what our family and friends are up to.

I don’t know if this sudden distaste for social media (yes, even blogs *gasp*) is because I spend all day on the computer at my job or if I would feel this way regardless of my work situation. Does anyone else out there feel the same way I do? Do you all understand where I’m coming from or do you see if completely differently? I’m interested to know.

Chelsea has noted that when you ask people multiple questions, they tend to not get answered. Thus, I’ll leave you with those two questions and hope at least a couple of you start up a conversation with me about this.

  1. I completely agree. I had recently deleted my entire blog MONTHS ago because I felt like it was an addiction. It didn’t seem right to put your life out there for the whole world to see and read. From all these social medias, I feel our lives are no longer private because we want to “show off” in a way, show everyone how our lives are going, the fun things we do, etc. Sometimes I feel like it honestly is no one’s business. And eventually sometimes it gets used against you, like the Mck blog chick. Her life is so OUT THERE that people know too much. THey think they are making a difference, but they shouldn’t be surprised when things like that happens to them because they are flashing their life to the world.

For me, it’s something I have been wanting to quit for a long time but family and friends read them all the time, so that’s the only reason I dont stop yet…. Im so far away, this is the only way for them to see what I am up too, etc. but whats wrong with emails???? LOL no private, that’s for sure. So yeah, I’m debating the same thing in my mind right now. We’ll see which side of me wins : )

    • ***???? LOL MORE private, that’s for sure*****

      typo

    • Glad I’m not alone. I feel like the computer often hogs a lot of useful time I could use to spend with John, try new recipes, visit with family & friends, read a book, do arts & crafts, etc. However, like you, a great deal of why I hang onto all of this (at least for now) is to keep in touch while we’re so far away.

  2. If I’m doing a lot on the computer at work, I definitely cut back on doing personal computer stuff (blogging, emails, etc.). One can only take so much screen time in a day!

    • you know what’s the worst? When your eyes get completely dried out from staring at the screen.

That happened to me yet again today, and my contacts got stuck in one place on my eyes until I moved them. Eek!

  3. I have never understood the attraction of Twitter. Facebook is annoying me too. A girl I knew in junior high had a baby yesterday and posted a photo of her baby JUST MINUTES after birth with her cell phone. I can understand sending a photo to your family via email that quickly…. but to the entire facebook community? Shocking.

As for blogging, I’m all in. I love it. Moreso because it gives me an outlet to WRITE everyday, not because I really care to talk about myself. But I agree with Vesper up there, you have to find the balance. Don’t put all of your business out there. Some things need to be private.

I hope you keep blogging. It helps me pretend that yall are just a few hours away! 🙂 I love that we’ve been able to keep in touch via your blog and mine even though yall are so far away.

    • Don’t worry. I will keep blogging. I do enjoy that it lets me keep in touch with you guys back home. I also like that I can look back and see what we were doing 1, 2, 3+ years ago (I had another blog before this). Part of the blog this is just that I don’t want to feel like I “have” to post.

  4. I agree, too. I want to delete my fb account, but not until I move back home – unfortunately I keep up with just a few important people which makes me want to keep it.

  5. I agree totally right now with you, Sarah. I’m in two internet classes and work as an administrative assistant so the last thing I want to spend my time doing is putting more thought into looking at my computer screen. Althought I love MckMama, I will say that she is cutting back on how much she posts (like where exactly there new house is), but it’s a choice you make, kinda like becoming a celebrity so I don’t think she should be shocked when the bad comes with the good. I think Chelsea does a great job of just writing about something that’s going on and expanding it into more of a conversation than an “all about me” blog and she does well in keeping the private, well, private. I keep telling myself that when I’m done with school, I’ll blog more because I really do enjoy it, but more as a journaling thing than actually being a good, creative blog writer.

  6. Social media is sleeping on my couch right now. We got into fight.

Seriously though, I think it comes and goes for me. I’ll get super involved with it, and then one day I just stop. I try to keep up with my blog because I enjoy doing it, but sometimes a girl can only take so much…

  7. We got into “a” fight, that is. I am typing on the WORST keyboard right now.
