Today Germany is looking a bit more appealing than it was yesterday. I finally got to see the dermatologist, which was on the German economy (aka a German doctor) since the military does not staff at dermatologist at our health facility. My experience today at the doctor was one of the best doctor’s visits of my life and it included 40 pricks on my skin as well as a blood test. If you know me, you know I get woozy at the sight of blood and have even fainted from seeing it before, so for me to declare a doctor’s visit in which I get blood drawn a good visit is a big deal.

The doctor’s office was in a cute part of town that we haven’t explored much. It was near downtown and the hills, and the street was super cute. I couldn’t find the doctor’s office and walked into the wrong building, but I spoke enough German to a receptionist there that she knew I was lost. She took me down to the street and walked me a few doors down to my doctor’s office. How nice! She also said something to the effect of “the street numbering system can be kind of confusing” in German, and I was excited I understood her.

Once I made it up to my doctor’s office (another confusion since I didn’t see a building directory and there were 5 or 6 floors in the building…note: check the listing inside the elevator!), I was able to sit down for a few minutes in a fairly comfortable chair and notice that the office had bottled water patients could pour for themselves while they waited. What a pleasant place!

I was called in within about 10-15 minutes of my arrival and surprise! I wasn’t called in by a nurse. The doctor came out to the waiting room to greet me, shake my hand and bring me back to her office. After going over all 3 reasons for my visit, she led me to another room to get a skin prick test for allergies. The receptionist/nurse performed that and was really nice as well. We talked for a few minutes while she put all 40 drops of my arms and then pricked my skin. I then waited in the waiting room for 20 minutes to see what happened on my arms. Apparently I’m allergic to cherries. Weird. Since I hardly ever have them around, I don’t think I ever would have discovered that otherwise.

I ended up having to get blood drawn for some more conclusive tests and will return to that doctor for a follow up visit in 3 weeks. In the meantime, she prescribed 2 medications for me. I wish all doctors’ offices were as pleasant as hers.

The middle school across the street keeps blaring music before and after school. Yesterday morning, they played the “Cha Cha Slide” at 8 AM and a lot of the kids were out front dancing to it. Today, I have heard songs from Grease, Michael Jackson’s “Beat It” and other unrecognizable tunes coming from over there ever since school let out 45 minutes ago. I wonder what the deal is! (Not that I mind or anything.)

I didn’t get together the cooking adventures blog post, but I promise, it will be up tomorrow. John and I can’t wait to share all our recent fun cooking experiences with y’all.

Oh, speaking of “y’all,” I’ve noticed that I have cut back on my usage of “y’all” lately. I desperately need a visit back to Texas ASAP!

  1. hahaha! It’s common here that you’re called in by the doctor, didn’t realise it was ‘ special’ haha, cool to hear! My doctor (actually I have two, but they are married to eachother) kind of knows who I am (as in acquitances), which is weird in a way, lol. Esp when I went in the other day to have him do this surgery and I had to undress! LOL. There I was in my underwear, I felt a bit embarrassed. I know, you shouldn’t be embarrassed by a doctor…but still!

    • Oh this makes me excited to tell you all about the differences in visiting the doctor here versus in the US!!

And I definitely understand about being a little embarrassed, I’ll write more about this later (probably on “Not Me!” Monday *smile*), but I had to pull my pants down for the doctor, which was weird for me!

  2. Y’ALL are so cute! Loved hearing about the Dr… rellly weird about cherries.

    • Thanks, Laura! And yes…very weird about the cherries indeed. I’ll be interested to see what they say about my blood test results in a few weeks.
