(AKA my first ski trip)
Yup, we’re leaving in (hopefully) 4-4.5 hours for the Alps for a weekend of skiing. Thankfully, I feel much better today. Now, I think I just have a bit of a cold, and I can deal with that. I could not, however, ski with the aches and other lovely flu-like symptoms I was having Monday-Wednesday.
The drive is about 4 or 5 hours, so we will get in around dinner time and just hang out tonight. Tomorrow we will go for day #1 of skiing. John got me some private lessons for a couple hours in the morning, and then we’ll ski together in the afternoon. We will ski again on Saturday and then take it easy on Sunday. We’ll get up early on Monday and check out and head to Innsbruck, Austria (yes, away from the direction of home). It’s about an hour drive through the Alps to get there. We’ll have lunch in Innsbruck and then head to Neuschwanstein castle in Germany, which is another 1.5 hour drive back toward home. After exploring and taking some photos, we’ll make the final 3.25 hour drive home. Hopefully it will be a fun, safe trip!
We got the weather John wanted right before leaving – fresh powder in Garmisch. It is also supposed to be clear driving today, but so far, the fog hasn’t moved out. It’s so thick that I can’t see across the street. The weather website describes our current weather as “light snow freezing fog.” One, it’s so foggy that I can’t tell if it’s actually snowing, and two, I haven no idea what “freezing fog” is. I wonder if it has another other meaning that it’s just freezing and foggy. (Edit: Nevermind. John explained it to me. It does not sound like nice weather!)
Oh, the elephants downstairs are making a racket again. In the past, I have referred to any upstairs neighbors as “the elephants.” Apparently the construction is so great here, and our neighbors are so light-footed (sarcasm), that oftentimes, we can hear them walking when we’re the floor above them! This morning, I woke up to what sounded like their toddler dropping a hollow plastic toy on the ground repeatedly. I have heard this before, but it was enough to wake me out of a deep sleep this morning. I actually didn’t mind being woken up, but I would rather not have continued hearing it once I was up. Can’t I turn this alarm off? By the way, we’re also privy to some of the couple’s arguments (they talk THAT loud), their baby’s cries, and at times, door and cabinet-slamming. I miss our old neighbors!
I better go get everything together for our trip. We’re already packed, but of course, had to leave the toiletries until after we got ready this morning. Also, I don’t think you’ll hear anything from me until we get back, because the lodge we’re staying at doesn’t have free WiFi. At least it didn’t when we were there last (when John proposed to me!).
Have a great weekend, everyone!
Freezing fog? Sounds like an oxymoron to me!
Have fun skiing. I hate it with a passion but hopefully you’ve adapted to the cold enough to enjoy it.
Thanks, Chelsea! We actually delayed skiing until tomorrow, so we’ll see how it goes. I’m hoping for a good day :o)
