Honeymoon: Part 1 (Pictures Included!)

It has been 3 months since our honeymoon (wow), and I’m having trouble remembering all these notes John and I made as talking points for the blog. I’ll do my best, but I know there is a lot I’m forgetting.

After the wedding, we spent the night at the Emily Morgan hotel by the Alamo. We were up early the next day to get to the airport, and Andrew was our chauffeur. When we got to the San Antonio airport, we found out our plane was delayed for two hours, which was long enough to make us miss our connection at DFW for Cancun, so we got rebooked on a different flight from San Antonio and a different one in Dallas, which put us into Cancun about 5 hours later than expected. Catherine and Louie were also supposed to be on the SAT-DFW flight that was delayed, so we got to grab a bite to eat with them at the airport while we waited.

We had a long layover in Dallas (something like 3-4 hours as I recall), and I was eager to get going again. When we boarded the plane, we noticed there were at least 3 other newlyweds sitting within a few seats of us. The couple next to us was our exact opposite. By the end of the flight, the guy, who was sitting next to John, was on my last nerve, especially when he tried to instruct me how to use a camera.

A good part about our flight is that during our descent, we got to see a beautiful rainbow over some coastal/marshy region, which was really neat. I included a picture of that in the slideshow below.

Once we got to Cancun, got our bags, and went through customs, it was time to find our ride. John had arranged transportation, which I thought meant a cab or town car. When I saw the black Lincoln Navigator limousine waiting for us, I couldn’t help myself, I exclaimed “holy crap!”

The limo ride was fantastic. We put in a Bob Marley CD, which we deemed very beach vacation worthy, and enjoyed a beer while looking out the windows and seeing people stare at our ride. There was one part that was a little scary that looked like a police checkpoint, but we couldn’t see much overall since it was already very dark out. The one thing I didn’t like about the ride was all the topes in the road (think little round speed bumps). They have those everywhere.

When we got to our hotel, we were amazed. The place was gorgeous, and the staff was all so helpful and pleasant. We were greeted with a glass of champagne each, and the concierge acquainted us with the hotel. Then, Paz the bellboy took us up to our room, giving us a tour as he went along. When we got to our room, we were floored again. It was huge! As another example of great customer service, Paz went around and turned on all the lights in our room for us. Fantastic!

I included several pictures of the room in the slideshow below, but I have to reiterate a few things. One, the bed was the most comfortable thing I have ever slept in. And two, our balcony had a great view. Oh, there was also a lounge right by our room with fruit, cheese, and wine. We made frequent trips there for the Swiss cheese. Yum!

That night, we went down to the lobby bar, which people actually hang out in! We each got a drink and relaxed on the beach bed. It was so weird to be relaxing on a bed in the middle of a bar, but it was also very pleasant. The whole area in there is open air, which is also nice, because it brings in a fresh breeze (and during the day, you can see down to the beach). There was also live music in the lobby bar, which was cool.

When we came up to our room, we were hungry, so we ordered room service. I don’t remember what we got, but it was good (and included in the price we’d already paid! Hurray!).

The next day, we got up early (a regular thing for us, as I’m sure you all are aware) and had breakfast at Pelicano’s, which was right down by the beach. I had scrambled eggs and bacon, and John had a breakfast burrito. We both thoroughly enjoyed our breakfasts. It was also amazing to sit right by the beach and enjoy breakfast.

That afternoon, we at lunch at Spice, which is a buffet-style restaurant. It was alright, but we preferred other restaurants at the resort. After lunch, we decided to explore the area. We walked down 5th Avenue. We experienced a lot of the typical shop owner heckling to get us to come in, but it wasn’t that much different than walking through the West Mall on UT’s campus. We bought a few souvenirs for our family, as well as a cross and spoon rest for ourselves before heading back to the hotel.

The rest of the afternoon, we explored the hotel and decided to rent a movie (again, included in our price). We rented “The Devil Wears Prada,” which was entertaining even the second time around. (I saw it in the theatres when it was first released.)

That night, we ate dinner at Maria Marie, the resort’s French-Spanish fusion restaurant. It was amazing. Maria Marie and Pelicano’s were my favorite restaurants. Maria Marie had these rolls stuffed with cream cheese that were delicious as well as phenomenal guacamole. Two of the days there, I ordered this tilapia dish as an appetizer. Look at me ordering fish! (Speaking of, I had tuna for lunch today.)

That brings me to Tuesday, which I’ll start with again on my next post. For now, I’ll just leave you with some pictures from what I’ve talked about in my entry.
