First, I have a question about our trip to Baden-Baden that remains unanswered. Saturday night we were out on the balcony and around midnight, these glowing objects appeared to be rising off the lawn at the bottom of the hill (in front of the casino) and travelling up over the tree line. It looked very magical, but I’m still puzzled as to what it was. They went up one at a time, and I counted about 25-30 in all. They looked like luminarias. It’s been bugging me for weeks now, so if anyone has any ideas or answers, let me know. John thinks htey somehow lit a fire in an upside down bag and it caused it to act like a hot air balloon. I just have no idea..
My other question for y’all is what is your definition of geography? Don’t go look it up. I want to know what you think it is. It’s amazing how my entire class (myself included before I looked it up) and everyone I have talked to doesn’t really know what geography is. I’d like to see what your general idea is. I’ll post in a day or two about the real definition and what we learned in my geography class (called “Patterns and Processes of Primary Production”). Some of it was pretty interesting!
I don’t remember the exact details about your trip but I suspect it had to do with the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival. I don’t know if there were big asian population there or not, but the time seems to coincide w/ the Festival (around mid september)
My literal definition of geography would derive from the latin definition of geo, meaning earth so geography is the study of the earth’s surface and whatever is on the earth’s surface.
Thanks, Jason. Unfortunately, I don’t think the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival is the answer to our question with the luminarias. We were there over Labor Day weekend, so we were just a bit too early for that. Good theory, though!

As for geography, I always thought it was the non-geology study of the earth; layouts of cities, aquaducts, random stuff like that that doesn’t really have another category.
