Winter Photo Update Part 2

After a week in DC and spending a week catching up at home, I found it hard to want to blog again. Saturday has struck me with the urge to get a lot of things accomplished, and so far so good. Along with that motivation came the urge to finish posting our winter photos (thus far). Granted, this doesn’t include the time in DC, but I think that’s best kept for a separate post.

Extreme Makeover: Snow Edition

Hi everyone, I know the US has had quite the cold snap going on, but I wanted to share what we have been dealing with… The first picture is from the summer. The second is from today. Brr. By the way, we haven’t been above about 30 degrees for a couple weeks now. It spends most of the day sitting right about 25 degrees. (Please excuse the fact that we have taken these pictures through the screen on the window.)

Ten on Tuesday (vol. 4)

Molly from Considering the Campbells came up with Chelsea’s Ten on Tuesday questions today. Visit both their blogs to see their answers too! (Like Chelsea, my spacing is also messed up. I can’t get extra spaces to work between paragraphs today. Sorry!
Also, please send John wishes for good health. He was home sick today and spent all day on the couch.

1. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a photographer or a dancer. I dabbled in both at various times through my teens and early twenties. In high school, I was captain of the pep squad and later was on the dance team and was an officer on the team as well. I also danced incredibly long hours at a dance studio. In college, I took ballroom dance and spent many evenings at Midnight Rodeo, The Broken Spoke or Gruene Hall dancing the night away.
I got my bachelor’s degree in journalism, and spent countless hours working on perfecting my skills in college and for a few years after. I even worked for two Austin photographers for awhile and had my own photography business. For now, it’s just a hobby, but maybe once we get back to the States I’ll pick it up again. (I need to save a bit to replace most of my equipment.)
2. Name 3 of your irrational fears.
- Bugs. Really, I don’t think that’s so irrational. They’re disgusting and creepy crawly and blech. Whatever, some people might say that’s an irrational fear.
- My subconscious seems to fear that John will stop loving me and/or will leave me. I have dreams about that frequently. Awake Sarah doesn’t have those fears.
- I can’t think of a third one.
3. If you had a $200 gift card to any store, what would you want it to be? (Nothing responsible allowed. Can’t be used for groceries or anything)
A craft store like Hobby Lobby – you can’t go wrong with $200 to spend on quilting, knitting, scrapbooking, etc!
4. What is your most (blog-friendly) embarrassing moment?
Apparently, I have a few moments that I’ve already mentioned – 11 to be exact. My most embarrassing moment to date, however, has to do with sixth grade, forgetting to wear a bra to school and my older brother having to go through my underwear drawer to bring one to school and drop it off in the attendance office for me to pick up. That’s the short version. I was mortified.
5. If you were only allowed to eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
I’d choose enchiladas, because I could vary it by having beef, chicken, cheese or veggie enchiladas. Added with all the sauce choices, I’d have variety for a month! Besides, enchiladas are delicious.
6. What was your favorite toy growing up?
My parents got something that came in a big box, which I turned into a spaceship. That was the coolest spaceship ever. Way better than the stuff NASA is launching these days. :)
7. Do you have a “go to” outfit? What is it?
No. In the winter, I wear my black pants almost ever day. I love wearing my black patent leather high heels with them. I change it up with the shirts.
8. Who was the best teacher you ever had?
Mr. Hankins–He was my teacher two years in a row. The first year was for US History and the second year was for Psychology/Sociology. He often taught using the Socratic method, and I loved his classes. I was terrified to contribute as I was really quiet in high school, but I loved his classes. I still go back and visit him.
Mis Wis–I had Mis Wis for two years as well. She was my Algebra II teacher and then I was her assistant senior year, which meant I helped plan graduation. She’s such a sweet lady. She retired last year, and I still keep in touch with her.
9. If you could buy any car right now (something at least SORT OF within the realm of reality…so, you know, a Rolls Royce may not qualify), what would it be?
We would either get an F-150 for John or an Acura TL or a Volvo XC90 for me (a C70 would be nice, but it’s not exactly family friendly).
10. How do you reckon that Chelsea comes up with 10 of these questions every week? It was hard! What’s your theory on how she’s so creative? Are you going to help her?
I will try to think up a list of my own and send her my suggestions. :) I like having themes for all the questions. Maybe it would make it easier to come up with questions if each week had a theme???

We’ve been meaning to post but we haven’t had time…

[Rant]

So this morning I sat down to read my dose of Roots and Rings. Chelsea always has something interesting to say and if you don’t read her blog, you should. Today she noted that another blogger had written about people who say “I wish I could do…” but then never make the effort to do whatever it is their heart’s desire. Along those lines, I can’t stand it when people say “I haven’t had time to…” I left a comment about this over on RnR, but I had to get my rant out here as well…

It is a huge pet-peeve of mine when people tell me that they “haven’t had time to…”

“I wanted to call you last week but I didn’t have time.”

“I wanted to read ‘Harry Potter’ but I haven’t had time.”

BULL.

Very few people “don’t have time” to do things.

But John, I work 12 hours a day 5 days a week and… blah blah blah. The fact is, most of us have time that we spend relaxing, watching TV, going for a walk, working on a home improvement, mowing the lawn, doing whatever.

Instead of telling me you didn’t have the time to do it, please tell me that you have had the time, but you’ve chosen to spend your time doing something else. I promise not to be offended.

Thoughts about Jesus

It is often said that Jesus was both fully man and fully God. If you are at all like me, this is a difficult concept for you. What does it mean to be both God and man? Most would say that sinlessness is a crucial part of that equation. The Bible tells us that Jesus lived a sinless life, and while I certainly accept this as Biblical truth, I struggle to picture a sinless day, let alone a sinless life.

Part of the reason I struggle with the idea of Jesus being fully man is that I would contend that part of the human condition is experiencing failure to live up to God’s standards. Falling short of the Holiness of the Creator is something that every human being has experienced. Every human except for Jesus. I am sure that Jesus struggled with temptation to sin. The Bible even gives accounts of Satan tempting Jesus.

Would you say that being fully human involves falling short of the glory of God? Perhaps Jesus was fully man by living like pre-fallen man in a fallen world?

What does it mean to be fully God? Is God even susceptible to temptation? If not was Jesus fully God? Perhaps God allowed himself to be tempted in order to be fully human?

Any thoughts on this?

How God and Jesus work are quite a mystery. What’s not a mystery however is what Jesus did for us, and how He loves us. At times when I am overwhelmingly confused by the mystery of God, I just have to rest in his love. Take some time today to rest in the truth of God’s love for you.

A Different Kind of Post.

I know that we normally use this blog to keep everyone updated on what’s going on in our lives, but I wanted to Share something else with everyone…

I just read an entry on an old friends blog that really knocked the breath out of me. All too often we worry about what is going to happen in the future. For Sarah and me this means concern about deployment, where I will be stationed, what will happen after I get out of the Army, what kinds of careers we will go into, what kind of house we will have, where we will live, and all of the other things that go along with the uncertainty of being in the Army. I get so caught up in what might happen in the future that I sometimes forget to faithful to where God has me at this moment. I think that it’s too easy to forget that God has a plan for me in my present situation. God has a plan for Sarah and me, and it involves where we are currently. Even if where we are is not our “dream” or “calling”, we are where we are for some purpose.
I think our lives should be a blank slate for God to write on. We need to be okay with whatever he wishes, because our plans may not be his.
I always hated the story of Job. I always thought it was because God didn’t act the way that I wanted him to. I felt like God gave Job the short end of the stick. I realize now that I didn’t like the story because I didn’t like the way that Job responded. I wanted Job to do something about his situation! I wanted him to either curse God and die, like his friends (or was it his wife?) suggested, or take some action to fix his situation. I didn’t like (and still struggle with) the idea of honoring God in the times he allows us to suffer. Its hard to see past our problems and see that God has a purpose for our suffering, our happiness, our boredom, and all the other moments of our life. Job lived in the present. He accepted his suffering as part of God’s will. Who am I to question God’s sovereignty? It is our job to honor the situation we are in, and follow God’s will the best we can.
So all of you who might read this, take a moment today to think about why God has you in your current situation. What you have to learn and how you can grow and be faithful to where you currently are. I sure am.

It’s Not Raining Men, but…

Mud?

Really? It’s raining mud? Apparently that’s the story. Catherine and I just came out of a coffee shop in Olmos Park, and her white car was covered in reddish brown splatterings. It was raining, so we were confused. We got in the car, turned on the windshield wipers and examined the subsequent falling raindrops. They, too, contained the grainy red brown bits.

Confused, I called my mom, who informed me that dust from El Paso came through with this storm and so the forecast was calling for mud showers. How odd.
