They Call You Lady Luck
January 21, 2010
I’ve never considered myself as someone who is particularly lucky. Heck, prior to this month I had never won anything other than a free kids meal at my favorite restaurant. I used to win those free meals all the time, and when I found out every kid who enters that drawing wins, I was crushed.
With that in mind, get this…
I won a drawing at work (company-wide) a couple weeks ago. There were literally thousands of entries. How cool is that?
Speaking of work (which I don’t do often on here), I mentioned in my Seven Quick Takes post last week that I am getting the opportunity to travel for work. I never thought that my position would involve travel, and technically, it doesn’t. However, we are undergoing some restructuring and the company wants to send me back to the States for training. Last Tuesday (a week ago), I was told to prepare for a business trip to the DC-area January 26-28, which would put me as traveling January 25-29. Due to travel costs, I’m actually going to leave on Saturday. Wow!
John also found a way to come along, and he’s currently somewhere over the Atlantic on his way to DC. I can’t wait to see him (and the US) on Saturday night! That being said, I’m have an irrational fear of flying, so I’m not actually looking forward to the flying part. Too bad that takes up about 13 hours of getting there (not including airport time). Anyone have any tips to calm my fears? I’ve flown a lot, and sometimes I don’t get too worked up, but this time around, I’m pretty freaked out.

Congrats on the giveaway!!
That’s exciting about the travel. I got really excited a couple of years ago when I got to go to Denver for a work trip because it felt so grown up, going to another country (even though it is your own) is way more exciting! I love DC, too.

I have a fear of flying that varies in intensity, too. Allow yourself to be anxious about it now – trying to play it cool and bottle it up can make it all come out at once right before you board the flight. Take visual or writing things to do with you – crosswords and doodling make it go a lot faster for me. And definitely try to avoid a sleepless night before the flight – man, being tired makes the anxiety a hundred times worse!
Good luck!

with everything sharp and pointy now outlawed on flights, you won’t be able to do much hand work like knitting or crocheting. so if you did like to do these things to decompress, that won’t work…
if you have a laptop, you can bring some movies? something that you enjoy or is engaging.
and i would drop an ambien.
like, in a heartbeat.
and of course, a book if you like to read…
i hope you have a fantastic trip!

Yeah, I’m bummed that I can’t knit. Usually I just watch movies on my laptop (I get bored of the i flight entertainment) but John has my laptop, so I just have my iPhone and iPod, which are better than nothing. I’m also bringing Her Fearful Symmerty. Hopefully the 20 hours of travel (12 of flying, 2 of train/car travel, and 6 of airport waiting/layovers) won’t be so bad…
